Why Most New GoHighLevel Features are Distractions (And Which Ones Actually Work)

A look at the latest GHL updates through the lens of a tired agency owner. What's actually worth your time?

I remember the exact moment I realised I'd been doing this wrong.

It was a Tuesday afternoon, and I’d just spent three hours trying to "perfect" a brand new feature that GoHighLevel had dropped that morning. I was fiddling with buttons, testing triggers, and feeling very busy.

Then I looked at my actual to-do list. I hadn't spoken to a client in two days. My lead follow-ups were gathering digital dust. I was "building," but I wasn't actually doing any business.

GoHighLevel is a bit like a giant Swedish toy shop. It’s full of shiny things that look brilliant on the box, but half of them end up under the sofa because you can't figure out where the batteries go.

I’ve had to be honest with myself lately: just because a feature exists doesn't mean I should use it. Here is my weary, honest take on the latest GoHighLevel updates and which ones will actually help you pay the mortgage this month.

The Reality of GoHighLevel AI Ad Copy and Creative Tools

We need to talk about the AI ad manager. Technically, it's impressive. You can spin up images and headlines without leaving the dashboard.

The struggle I’ve found is that it’s very easy to look like every other mediocre agency on the internet. If you use the default AI settings to generate your creative, you're essentially asking a robot to look at a million other average ads and give you the average of those averages.

It’s tempting when you’re tired. You think, "I'll just let the AI handle the Facebook copy."

But the real lesson I’ve learned is that GHL’s AI tools are best used as a rough draft. If you use them to replace your thinking, your results will tank. I started using them as a "blank page killer" instead. I let it write something terrible, I laugh at it, and then I write something human.

If you’re looking to scale, book a consultation to discuss how to actually wrap these tools into a service that doesn't just look like a template.

Why the New GHL Communities Feature for Customer Retention Matters

For a long time, the membership area in GHL felt like it was built in 2004. It worked, but it didn't exactly make people feel like they belonged to a high-end club.

The new Communities feature is a genuine shift. It’s an attempt to pull people away from Facebook Groups, which are basically just distraction engines designed to make you look at cat videos when you should be learning.

What I’ve noticed about building communities in GHL:

    • It keeps your clients inside your ecosystem, not Mark Zuckerberg's.
    • The "Gamification" features actually work, provided you don't make them cringeworthy.
    • It simplifies the tech stack, which is my favourite hobby.

The vulnerability here is that a community is only as good as the person leading it. I tried to launch one with zero plan, thinking the "platform" would do the work. It didn't. It just looked like a very quiet, digital empty room. Use this feature only if you have the energy to actually show up for your people.

Improving Lead Conversion with Advanced Workflow Triggers

The updates to Workflows are where the real, boring, profitable work happens. I love boring work because it’s usually the stuff that pays the bills.

GHL has added more granular triggers for things like "Wait for Reply" and conditional branching based on specific AI-calculated sentiment. This is one of those more articles on AI moments where the tech starts to feel a bit more like a helpful assistant and less like a blunt instrument.

For example, you can now build a path that says: "If the lead sounds annoyed, stop the automation and ping me immediately so I can apologize."

That is huge. Most automation is a "set it and forget it" trap that eventually makes your brand look like a cold, unfeeling machine. Being able to branch based on how someone actually feels is a massive step toward not being a nuisance.

Is the GoHighLevel WhatsApp Integration Worth the Extra Cost?

This is a point of contention for many. WhatsApp is now deeply integrated, but it comes with its own set of rules and costs.

In the UK and Europe, WhatsApp is the king of communication. I tried to avoid it for a while because I liked the old-school simplicity of SMS. But I was wrong. People open WhatsApp messages. They reply to WhatsApp messages.

Here is the checklist for using GHL WhatsApp without losing your mind:

    1. Keep it personal: Don't send "blast" broadcasts that look like spam.
    2. Use it for support: It’s brilliant for quick "How do I do X?" questions.
    3. Watch the fees: The Meta conversation fees can sneak up on you if you aren't careful.
    4. SalesM8: If you are looking for a way to really supercharge these interactions, check out SalesM8.

The struggle is keeping your personal life separate. If you’re like me, seeing a work notification in the same app you use to talk to your mum is a recipe for a Sunday evening panic attack. Set your "Off" hours in the CRM, or specify that this channel is for business only.

The "E-commerce" Shift: Is GoHighLevel Ready for Real Stores?

GHL has been pushing their e-commerce and "Payments" features hard. You can now build fairly sophisticated shopping carts and manage recurring subscriptions with much more finesse than before.

Is it a Shopify killer? No. Not yet.

But for a service-based business that wants to sell a few digital products or a "pay-as-you-go" service, it’s finally good enough. I’ve made the mistake in the past of trying to stitch together four different platforms just to sell a PDF. It was a nightmare of Zapier hooks and broken links.

The new internal GHL payments system is a relief. It’s one less password to remember and one less bill to pay. Just don't try to build the next Amazon on it just yet. It’s built for us—the consultants, the agencies, and the small business owners—not for global logistics empires.

My Honest Conclusion on the Latest Updates

If I’m being completely transparent, I don't use 70% of what GoHighLevel releases. And that’s okay.

The trap we all fall into is "Feature FOMO." We see a new update video and think that if we don't implement it by Friday, we're falling behind.

The most successful agencies I know use the same three or four core features:

    • Solid Lead Capture.
    • Simple, fast follow-up.
    • A clean pipeline to see where the money is.
    • Good, honest communication.

The latest GHL updates are fantastic tools, but they’re just hammers and screwdrivers. You still have to decide what you’re building.

If you want to read more about the philosophy behind keeping things simple while using high-tech tools, you should get the free book. It’s full of the stuff I wish I’d known before I started clicking every "New Feature" button I could find.

Don't let the software run your business. Run your business, and use the software to make it slightly less exhausting.
